Selling a trades company in Florida? Storm revenue, license qualifiers, insurance, and seasonal demand all affect what buyers will pay. Here's what to prepare for.

Florida trades companies face four valuation issues most other states don't feel as hard. Buyers may discount storm-driven revenue spikes as one-time income. They need a plan if the owner is the company's license qualifier. They examine insurance costs and claims history closely. And they look at how seasonal and snowbird demand affects cash flow. Preparing for each before a sale protects your price.

![guy-shows-document-girl-group-young-freelancers-office-have-conversation-working-min](https://bluecollarcoaches.com/hs-fs/hubfs/guy-shows-document-girl-group-young-freelancers-office-have-conversation-working-min.jpg?width=5600&height=3738&name=guy-shows-document-girl-group-young-freelancers-office-have-conversation-working-min.jpg)

If you run a trades company in Southwest Florida, you know the rhythm.

A hot summer. A quiet stretch. Then a storm, and suddenly you're three weeks behind and turning away work.

That storm year might be your best year ever. A buyer might treat it as your least reliable year.

### 1. Storm revenue isn't normal revenue

When a hurricane drives a surge in roof replacements, AC change-outs, rewiring, tree work, and repairs, revenue jumps. Buyers know that.

So a smart buyer will try to *normalize* your earnings: strip out the storm bump and value what a regular year looks like. If your pitch is built on the storm year, expect pushback.

**The move:** Track storm-related revenue separately, job by job. Show a buyer your normal year and your storm years side by side. Owning the story beats getting caught by it.

### 2. Who holds the license?

In Florida, a contracting business generally operates under a licensed qualifier. In many small shops, that's the owner.

That creates a real question for a buyer: *if the owner leaves, who qualifies the business?*

**The move:** Develop a licensed second-in-command well before a sale, or know exactly how the qualifier transition would work. Confirm the specifics for your trade with a Florida attorney or the state licensing board.

### 3. Insurance is part of the price

General liability, workers' comp, commercial auto, and property coverage all hit your margin. In Florida, buyers will look hard at what you pay and why.

They'll also ask about your claims history. A clean safety record and a documented safety program make you easier to insure, and easier to buy.

**The move:** Pull five years of loss runs from your carriers now. If there's a story behind a claim, write it down while you remember it.

### 4. Seasonal cash flow

Snowbird season, summer peaks, and slower shoulder months create real swings in cash. Buyers want to know you can carry payroll through the slow months without the owner floating the business.

**The move:** Show 24 to 36 months of monthly financials. Maintenance agreements help level the dips, and buyers notice.

### Local advantage

Here's the upside. Florida keeps growing, and buyers want to be here. Companies that are prepared get attention.

### FAQ

**Do hurricanes increase or decrease the value of a Florida trades business?** Storms can boost revenue for a year or two, but buyers often treat that as non-recurring. Valuation is usually based on normalized earnings, so tracking storm revenue separately helps.

**What happens to my contractor license when I sell my Florida business?** Many Florida contracting businesses operate under a licensed qualifier. If the owner is the qualifier, a new qualifier is usually needed after a sale. Confirm the requirements for your trade with a Florida attorney or the state licensing board.

**What do buyers look at in a Florida contractor's insurance?** Buyers typically review premiums, coverage types, and several years of claims history (loss runs). A clean claims history and documented safety program support a stronger valuation.
